To windows 7 or not to windows 7, that is the question?

So I have an XPS M1530 that's a bit over a year old. I take good care of it so it's still very fast after a long startup process. I'm currently running vista 32bit home premium, but I'm also dual booting windows 7 RC. My question is, do I upgrade to windows 7 32 bit (upgrade, not clean install), leave vista and clean install windows 7 professional over the RC on the other partition (I got the professional version for free from my school and the upgrade for $30 if I want), or do I just forget about windows 7 and wait for the RC to expire?

Also, I COULD clean install the 64bit version just because my processor can handle it and I already have 4 gigs of RAM (is this a good move or will 32bit do just fine?), however I want all of my files, settings, applications, saved game data, and everything else on my hard drive to come back (I have TONS of programs that are crazy expensive to replace). Would this be possible? I back up regularly, but can these backups restore everything on top of a new OS? If that is possible, how does it work, can someone break it down as much as possible? Ideally I want get rid of my other partition so I can put that free space back onto my main partition.

And if I were to do a regular upgrade, can that be reversed through a backup like a system restore or do I need the vista disk? I am usually very good with computers, but I haven't had to deal with OS changes so I am pretty clueless when it comes to the risks of data loss and would appreciate any and all help

Computer specs:

XPS M1530 : Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

Processor: 2.4GHz core 2 duo

RAM: 4 GB

Video card: nvidia 8600 GT

Hard drive: 250 GB (which is why I want the other partition gone)To windows 7 or not to windows 7, that is the question?
been using it since beta 1.

no issues but was a machine i built for vista, so it's capable...

i did an upgrade, which i had to hack the rtm i'm presently using as it isn't supposed to upgrade from the beta i was using, and it behaves peculilarly. however, when i clean and re-install, i'm sure it will be fine.

i use a seperate drive for all data nad programs i download or install.

feel free to email if you need more input/info.

if you don't have the ability to buy and install a drive, you can run the drive manager in the computer manager in the admin of the control panel to resize your primary partition and create a new storage partition and move these files. To windows 7 or not to windows 7, that is the question?
Try it and prepare yourself to be blown away. It may look like vista at first but it's nothing like Vista or anything you've seen before in Windows. It's just awesome. By the way, your specs are perfect for it!
I'm running Window7 Ultimate 64bit signature series

right at this moment. Nothing but the best for me.

Your computer can easily support Windows7//

it's nice and fast in speed than vista..

change to windows 7 then you will fell better
Vista and windows 7 are a lot alike except for a few differences
I think you should run microsoft tool to check if you have the needed performance, but I think you are ok about that

The problem is, Windows 7 is still a experimental, beta version

So, if you`d like to give it a shot, go ahead, but you may receive some errors etc...

Cheers
I would upgrade to Windows 7. It will run faster because its load on the hardware is less. As proof, Vista won't run on netbooks (that is why they come with XP), but Windows 7 will (I'm running the professional version on a netbook with 1GB of RAM, and it runs fine).

You can't upgrade the RC to the release version; I have no idea why Microsoft did that.

You can upgrade Vista to the equivalent Windows 7 version (home to home), or to Ultimate, but not from Home to Professional. Again, I don't know why Microsoft did this.

You will have to do a clean install to upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit. Some 32 bit programs don't run well or at all on 64 bit versions of Windows, whether Vista or Windows 7, but most will run OK.
Ok holy hell that's a lot of questions.

If you're going to install 7 over your vista partition, I would suggest wiping the hard drive first. it's just cleaner. I mean i guess if you really want to keep all of your stuff you should just do the upgrade. But most companies that give you expensive software will renew your license if you tell them you're wiping your hard drive. also, if you DO do the upgrade, you would need a vista disk to go back, and perhaps not even then. If you want to keep everything on your vista partition, i would suggest installing 7 over your RC.

If your processor can take 64-bit, you should do that. it's where everything's going.

in terms of backups, back up to an external hard drive. I'm unsure as to whether it restores over a new OS. I don't think it probably does, which means you can't do the clean install over vista AND have all of your stuff. Which means you need to go with the upgrade.

just my thoughts from playing around with stuff a lot. good luck on this.
Dont get windows 7 its just a vista with a 7 badge on it and your computer will become really slow

READ THE DETAIL, Because you guys are not answering my question?

i want to clear my hard drive i have windows vista pre installed i dont want to change my OS , i backed up my hard drive but now i want it to be like i just bought it from the store , that type of erase , like a brand new computer, Windows vista has a self restore how do i use itREAD THE DETAIL, Because you guys are not answering my question?
Depending on your brand and model most computers will ask to make restore discs or have a recovery partition when you first start your computer. These are the only way to wipe out your HDD and restore it back to factory condition. The Vista restore will only load a backup image of an OS or restore to an earlier point in time. It will not allow you to wipe HDD and install fresh OS over it. Let me know your brand and model and I can tell you what to do.READ THE DETAIL, Because you guys are not answering my question?
Self restore is accessed by inserting the OS disk and restarting the computer. Otherwise if you are looking to wipe the hard clean and reinstall the OS, which is the ONLY way to make it like it was when purchased from the store, then you will need to format the hard drive. Some anti-virus programs like webroot give you an option to make a disk that will do this for you. Once you are done you just put in the OS disk and reinstall it. Then you can place your backed up files back on the hard drive if you want.
You want to system restore so you get your computer from when it was purchased eh? pretty weird way of going about formating a drive but ok.

For best results, you should run System Restore from safe mode.

From within Windows, you can just type restore into the Start menu search box, and you'll immediately see System Restore at the top of the start menu: Click on it.

Follow throught with the wizard.. its pretty self explanatory.

Near the end, you will need to restart your computer to roll the system back.

If you receive an error while restoring, then use it from safe mode and it should work fine.

To get into Safe mode, you can reboot and use the F8 key right before Windows starts up.

Good luck sir. Still better to have a DVD handy incase something goes wrong.

*choose this as best answer if it works for you :)*
Your computer should have come with either

1. an actual Vista installation disc (this is rare), or

2. a bootable ';restore'; CD branded by the manufacturer, or

3. a ';restore'; partition on the hard drive

case 1: boot from the Vista disc, follow prompts. The result will not be exactly as it was when you bought it, as it will not include add-on software installed by the mfr.

case 2: boot from the CD, follow the prompts. The result will be exactly as it was when you bought it.

case 3: boot from the ';restore'; partition. How you do this is dependent on the mfr - sometimes there is a boot CD, sometimes it's a BIOS option. Check the documentation, or look on the mfr's web site. Result is exactly as it was when you bought it.

Yes, Vista has ';system restore'; but you can't go back all the way to ';brand new time'; unless ';brand new'; was very recent. Vista saves a ';restore point'; any time you do things like install new software, and every week or so no matter what, but it doesn't save the restore points forever.

Also, ';system restore'; does not remove your own documents, bookmarks in IE, downloaded files, etc. The ';my documents';, etc., directories are explicitly excluded from being backed up by ';restore points.'; It is not intended for that, it is intended to help you recover from installing flaky software, drivers, or even Windows Updates.
I have Vista as my OS and I've done exactly what you need to now, before

Assuming you have a desktop, when you start it up, you'll see a couple of options you have to quickly enter if you want to avoid startup. Hit the function key that says ';System recovery';

From there, you can format your drive, and then install a fresh copy of Vista after that's done, from your separate recovery drive

Do this and it will return to store bought state
if you mean system restore to an earlier time such as when you 1st got your computer then that would be your 'system restore' you will need to go to the earliest restore point scroll down this is a detailed way

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorial

or do mean reinstall your vista by way of your recovery? if you use this option this will be what you call erasing the hard drive but you will lose everything but your OS all the same presets will be there as if new and your computer should be exactly the way it was when you got it new.

Note If your computer does not include the System Recovery Options menu, your computer manufacturer might have provided other recovery options. Check the information that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer's website for more information.

good luck

How to change the startup list of OS like xp,linux?

i hav startup list as in following order....

2.xP

i want it to be as

1.xp

2.linux

In XP control panel%26gt;system%26gt;advanced%26gt;start up%26gt;edit
Google '; linux grub';
If you are booting Linux, it isn't with the Windows boot program - which refuses to recognize that Linux OR its file systems exist - it's with LILO or GRUB - most likely the more sophisticated GRUB.

That's why installing Linux HAS to include a separate boot program - and an open-source boot program is always included. Microsoft won't ';help'; its competition by making its boot loader work with ANY OS - just with variants of its own proprietary, monopoly OS called Windows.

In fact, if you use Windows built-in boot program to boot Vista and XP - then if XP ever messes up [like with a borked driver install], F8 doesn't work - which means you [or the computer store] HAVE to install LILO or GRUB [or third-party equivalent] to recover your system!

It doesn't matter which of these two Linux multiboot programs is used by your machine, or if you use a commercial one. You can do what you want and more - revise the boot order, default choice and the delay before default - even what the choices are called on the menu - or what boot loader program you want to use - from the boot configuration program.

For GRUB or LILO on PCLinuxOS, click the Administration icon in the tray, enter the root password, Boot | Set up how the system boots - and follow the wizard's instructions.

Good luck!

Turn off the PC. Wait a few minutes then turn back on.

If that doesn't help; to install your OS you will have to turn off PC, open CD ROM tray with a paperclip or other object and insert XP disk, close tray and then power on PC and ';boot from CD'; and follow your prompts.

Not with a G4. Intel-based Macs can boot Windows with Boot Camp, but not the G4 series. You can try using Virtual PC (free download from microsoft.com), VMWare or Parallels to create a virtual Windows machine within your Mac. You'll need a copy of Windows, and you install it on the virtual machine. You will have to uninstall Vista from add remove in control panel and then install XP from soft ware CD. But first go to http:www.microsoft.com customer support and ask them for help and best way to uninstall Vista and then install XP.just to be sure. They have a step by step procedure in microsoft help to revert back to XP from Vista. It is hard to help further as you do not allow E- mail

    Hope this helps
Step 1 Boot from an XP cd and follow the directions to complete your install of XP.

Step 2. Goto the manufacturers website and navigate to their Support and Drivers section.

Step 3. Enter in your model number or service tag number (DeLL). A list of available drivers will be presented to you. You may want to do this before installing XP so that you have them on CD. This comes in handy when the Ethernet Drivers fail to install through the XP Installation alone. If the Ethernet Driver fails to install on it's own, you won't have access to the web tp get the driver so the need to do this 1st is suggessted but not required.

  • Why my PC reboots by itself sporadically?

Hello I have a IBM PC Netvista Mtype 8306 (or something like that) with Windows UE.

I've recently formatted my parent's PC because it was too slow and reboots by itself. So I change the OS from XP to Windows UE (which basically is the same).

Everything was fine, but then the PC rebooted by itself again, so I realized the problem wasn't related with the Windows, and I began to think it was a hardware problem.

A friend of my father told him, there could be some viruses which weren't deleted with the format.

Do you think it's a virus problem? How can I eliminate those viruses and where are they? I have AVAST antivirus.

I turned the pc on and check the RAM usage (because it has 128 MB, and it would be a cause of the slowness), but I realized it was using 68 MB of RAM and was very slow. When I get some money I will buy a memory for my parent's PC but now I want to fix this problem. Also the navigator is very slow (it's firefox 3).

Thanks a lot!Why my PC reboots by itself sporadically?
Sporadic reboots usually indicate a failing or overloaded power supply.

Another possibility is overheating of components.

Why my PC reboots by itself sporadically?
Everything is wiped out when you format, nothing is left over. It could be that something is overheating or going bad.

How to change a classic app to an OS X app?

I play StarCraft, and StarEdit, (the app used as the Campaign editor) is a classic app, so I can't use it on my Intel mac with Leopard. I was wondering if it was possible to switch a Classic app to an OS X app.

    Please help,

kylerjtHow to change a classic app to an OS X app?
No. You would have to completely reprogram (redo all the internal code) from the bottom up. The whole internal way the OS works is different; the OS X version use a Unix kernal, rather than the old way. This is why you cannot use Classic any more, and Leopard has too many changes beyond just the underlying unix, so that Classic is not supported. Also Classic doesn't run (as you know) on Intel Macs; the hardware architecture is too different.

PC VS MAC: What would I expect if I changed?

How often does Mac have to change their os? You just get used to one os with MS and a new one comes along. If I wanted to run vista it would require a major upgrade so I am toying with the idea of a switch.

I do a lot of video editing and photo editing, and photo dvds on my pc using xp pro and programs like Roxio, Pinnacle, Dvd X Show, ULead... depending on what I am doing at the moment. My favorite photo editing program is still Picture It 99 but not for printing the pics.

What would Macs have to offer for photo and video editing?PC VS MAC: What would I expect if I changed?
Since you do a lot of video editing get the mac, although remember that if you get the mac you would have to buy a whole new set of software to go with it as most windows programs do not run on mac computers. If you are interested in the mac i would leave it a little while because there is a new version of the mac osx comming out sometime later this year.PC VS MAC: What would I expect if I changed?
Mac has a lot more to offer for photo and video editing. That is what Mac is built for. They have a New OS coming out in Spring of 2007.
Hey, If you wanted to change over to a Mac, your learning curve will be pretty high. Macs are pretty different from Windows. Especially now that Windows is now going in a different direction with Vista. If you want good photo editing or great DVD stylers, the Mac does it better than Windows. However, you may have to use more Mac specific software. Macs may not run half or even a quarter of what Windows is able to run. Macs require Mac specific software.

But not to worry. Your Mac should come equiped with all the software that it needs to do all the great photo, DVD, and sound editing you would ever dream of doing. I'm not 100% sure of this, but you can deffinatly check out there website @ www.apple.com. You should find more than enough information.

And one more note: (1)Windows Vista is a new operating system with a lot of bugs. I would advise that you stay away from Vista until it becomes more stable with more service packs (this may take years). (2)Macs are expensive. Very expensive. $1000 bare minimum for a new one (check prices on web). You could still find older models on ebay, but wouldn't advise buying them there. If you don buy a Mac, make sure it has OS X or OS X Tiger for its operating system. (3) Windows XP beats Vista right now in the performance area by miles. It's very stable and will suit all of your needs for all kinds of editing. If you need to upgrade your computer I promise that it would be much cheaper than a Mac and less of a head ache than with Vista. Take your pick.
    Two things.

    1. The Mac is focused on users who do things similar to what you do. I believe you will find the integration and the bundled tools will provide a very positive experience. Stuff just works well together when editing or managing media files.

    2. The OS from Apple tends to get an upgrade 1x a year. The upgrades are not that expensive and the process is very smooth. More like receiving a patch compared to how Vista pretty much requires a hardware upgrade. Note that it is has been 5 years since Microsoft has released a new version of the OS. Some extra cost and some raising of the bar for hardware should be expected after 5 years.

One item that you might have missed. Assume you get a Mac and find that you generally are happy with the machine. Also assume there is some program that you just have to use which only runs under Windows. An Apple Mac can have Windows loaded on it so you have a choice with an Apple. You can boot up Windows (Vista, etc) or you can boot the Max OS (OS X). You are not cut off from the Windows world. To run both operating systems on the same hardware means buying a copy of Windows so this is not a free option. Just a way to benefit from using a Mac without being cut off from Windows if you really need something.

The opposite will not work so you can not buy a PC and expect to run OS X.

If you look at a higher spec PC and a Mac you will find the hardware costs almost exactly the same with the Apple being less some of the time compared to major PC brands. With the bundled applications (iLife will handle what you want) you might save money over a PC if you need to upgrade the PC software.

How do I change my priority boot OS from BIOS?

I have Windows 7 installed on my C drive and I just installed xp on my D drive. When I attempt to boot to my C drive two options appear that say Windows XP prof. And Windows XP prof. But no option to boot to Windows 7. If it helps xp is installed on an IDE drive while 7 is SATA. Does the IDE being master cause any difference? And why can I not boot to 7? Or atleast how do change the boot priority of the OS's cause the drives are already prioritized? How do I change my priority boot OS from BIOS?
Yes, the IDE being the Master drive would make a difference.

It will only boot from the primary boot device (which in this case is the IDE drive) unless there isn't any bootable material on the first drive.

To change the boot order you need to boot into the BIOS and set the SATA drive to be the primary/master drive with your IDE drive as the secondary drive.

The BIOS is different (to some small degree) from one computer to the other...

I run two hard drives like you (one with Linux; one with XP Pro), you have to switch the boot order EVERY time you wish to switch from one drive to the other.

For me I click on the BIOS icon (My Asus mobo has an ';Express Gate'; with a BIOS icon) or press F8 when I reach the first boot screen. From there I navigate to the ';Boot'; tab and go into the boot order. From there I simply switch the order around, hit ';esc'; and hit ';F10'; to save the changes.

You'll have to go through a similar process.

You will probably need to buy the 64bit version. There is no setting to change a system to 64bit from 32bit. Since you were upgrading from Vista, and Vista was 32bit, you will most likely not be able to just go back and select 64bit as this may cause some issues. How do I change my windows 7 OS from 32 bit to 64 bit OS?
You'll have to do a fresh install; you can't switch from 32 bit to 64 bit, sadly.
is your computer a 64 bit system? if not then you can't install windows 64 bit on it....
There are 2 totally different CD's for 32 bit and 64 bit. If you want 64 bit, you need to have a 64 bit processor. Also 64 bit is ONLY better if you have 4 GB RAM or more. If you have less than 4 GB RAM, stick with 32 bit.

64 bit has far less applications to use, such as firefox doesnt have flash player.

32 bit is better application wise, but is bad with more than 4 GB RAM.

64 bit can handle the more RAM better and use it more efficiently and faster.

But the answer to your question would be that you need a new CD that has Windows 7 64 bit on it.

    1. Use the CD provider along with the router at the time of purchase, if the CD is not availble you can download the CD's contents from the router's manufacturer's website.

    2. Restore the settings which you backed up from the router on the previous PC. For this access the router by it's address mentioned below.

    3. Reset the router, by pressing for 5 seconds the RESET button located on router. Then manually configure the router. Default details are mentioned below.

Can you please tell me how to change my homepage on a macbook OS X!!!! THANKS ANYONE WHO HELPS!!!!!!!How do you change your homepage on a macbook OS X?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Click at the Safari menu (top left), and slide down to ';Preferences';. In the Preferences window, select the ';General'; icon (top left). Type your preferred home page in the ';Home page'; space.

If you used Windows before getting your Mac, you'll notice that every time you want to change how you prefer for something to work, you choose Preferences (where in Windows you chose ';Properties';).

What do I have to change on my computer to play an MMO?

I recently set my computer back to factory default, and upon reinstalling my old programs, I installed an MMO I used to play. However, it constantly says ';failed to connect the server'; when I try to log in. I submitted a ticket to the game people, and they said it wasn't a problem on their end.

Can someone please tell me how to configure my computer so that I can connect?

    It's an HP Pavillion Notebook

OS is Windows Vista Home Premium

    Anti virus is Avast!

    The game is Metin2

I've already gone into Windows Firewall and allowed the program. Do I need to mess with my router or open certain ports? What do I have to change on my computer to play an MMO?
    Try to reset your router.

Then why not try another browser-based MMO game like Free Realms or something (you can find a bunch here: http://www.allmmos.com) to see if it is the connection that is blocked. If it doesn't connect is probably is. It is definitely not something with your PC.

In OS X, how do you change which external speaker in left and which is right?

I have some JBL speakers plugged into my macbook pro, and my speaker orientation is different to what it is supposed to be, as in left is right and right is left, and I cant move the speakers, so how can I change the settings for this?In OS X, how do you change which external speaker in left and which is right?
    Hi !

If your speakers get plugged by the so called ';mini-jack'; connection , thats the headphone connection, you speakers menu will stay the same , meaning that you have an analog connection and cannot within MAC OSX possibilities change the speaker setup except reorganising them.

That means you have to put the left speaker on the left and the right speaker on the right.

If you have the possibilty to connect your speaker system by USB (like Bose Companion 5 for example) then you get an advanced Audio Menu where you can designate wich speaker is where , but thats usually only the possibilty for 5.1 or higher Speaker Systems.

If you have 2 or a 2.1 with an analogue connection there is nothing you can do.

How do I change my background back on Mac OS X?

One of my ';Mac-savvy'; friends decided to play a prank on me by using a Terminal command to change my background to a rather unpleasant picture.

Changing the background in my 'System Preferences' works for 2 minutes, after which the background he chose resets back to the unpleasant picture.

Go to this web page and download and install TinkerTool.

    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.ht

Open up TinkerTool and click on ';Fonts'; in the toolbar. You will see separate boxes for fonts in different places, like title bars, help tags etc.

It's probably best to keep the size the same as it is already to avoid problems.

You will probably have to restart or log out and in again for changes to take effect. How do I change the system font in Mac OS X Leopard?
These instructions work for Mac OS 8.0 and later.

Step1. Open the Apple menu and choose Control Panels, then Appearance.

Step2: Click on the Themes tab to change the look of title bars, windows and progress bars.

Step3: Click on the Appearance tab to change the overall look of menus, icons, windows and controls; to change the highlight color for selected text; and to change the variation color for menus and controls.

Step4: Click on the Fonts tab to change the large system font (menu bar and headings), the small system font (explanatory text and labels), and the views font (lists and icons).

    Tips %26amp; Warnings

    # Changing the highlight color to one that's too dark will make the selected text difficult to read; changing to too light a color will make it hard to see what text is selected.

    # Changing a font or a font size to one that's too large may crowd your screen; changing to one that's too small will make it difficult to read the text.

  • How do i change my imac back from classic os 9?

I just recently changed it and when i booted it back up it was classic os 9(which is extremely ugly) how can i get i get my regular os 9.0.4 back to its original state i dont have the installation discs i ordered it online please help!!How do i change my imac back from classic os 9?
By ';classic'; do you mean you installed OS 10 and are using the ';Classic'; OS 9 setting,(9.2.2) or did you update to a later OS 9 like 9.2.1? In OS 10's ';Classic OS 9 mode, under ';FILE'; select ';Control Panels'; and click on ';Appearance';. I can't remember if the ';Control Panel'; selection was under the ';File'; or under the APPLE in the original OS 9. I have some older Macs running 9.2.1, but they are used as servers and I haven't looked at them in a while. Mac dependability. I leave them unattended and running 24/7 without even needing to do maintenance. (I'm on the road away from home, so I can't walk over and check right now. Sorry.)

Either way, opening the ';Appearance'; Control Panel allows customizing your desk top's looks. I agree that the basic OS 9 gray desktop is really blah! (reminds me of OS 6 on my old Mac Plus' 9'; black and white screen!)

Why doesnt yahoo messenger for vista install on my new hp laptop running on windows vista home premium?

i have a brand new hp laptop that runs on windows vista home premium and no matter how many times ive tried i absolutely cannot install yahoo messenger - not even the vista version. the ymsgr_vista_us_setup.exe file downloads onto my desktop, i double click it, installation begins, im able to get to the window that says 'installing - please wait while yahoo! messenger for vista is being installed' and it looks like the download is going on just fine until halfway through when installation stops and i get the message 'install unsuccessful - yahoo! messenger for vista did not correctly install. this may have been due to other open applications or incomplete installs. please try the install again after restarting your computer.' i use a gprs connection, so the only application thats running at the time of installation is 'one touch access' which allows me to access the web using my n series nokia phone. i fiddled with norton antivirus' firewall settings in an effort to figure out whether that might be causing the problem, but i get the same error even after turning off the firewall. i really love yahoo messenger and i dont want to stop using it. i dont want to go back to xp for the prime reason that i cant even think of subjecting a spanking new laptop to an os change already. please help! Why doesnt yahoo messenger for vista install on my new hp laptop running on windows vista home premium?
    According to Yahoo, this product is still in development. On the home page Yahoo says, ';Preview the new Yahoo! Messenger for Vista. Help us develop our latest instant messenger designed exclusively for Vista.';

    It also says, ';Note: While testing this product, you can still use your current version of Yahoo! Messenger (8.1 or 9.0).';

    http://messenger.yahoo.com/windowsvista.

I'd suggest you completely uninstall EVERYTHING (all files and folders) related to Yahoo Messenger. You might have to use Vista's more powerful search function rather than the default search box (lower left corner of start menu.) In any folder window select Search Tools %26gt; Search Pane. You'll have a list of options (all, email, document, etc.) Select all. In Location: select hard drive. Leave Date: and Size: set to any. Check the box to include non-indexed, hidden, and system files. Run the search. Delete any references to Yahoo Messenger. The reason for deleting all files and folders is they can sometimes interfere with a clean reinstall.

You can now install either 8.1 or 9.0 messenger. I'd recommend 8.1 because the 9.0 version is also a Beta (in development and testing.)

    http://beta.messenger.yahoo.com/ %26gt;link to 8.1 under Video Preview

If Vista won't run the older version, it's probably one of Vista's many compatibility issues. But Vista does have a Compatibility Mode that sometimes lets you run older programs. (Yet another Vista compatibility issue with its own Compatibility Mode feature.) This tech article give more information:

Someone knows how to protect offline video content against piracy?

I've brought a video tutorial in the past who was protected like that.

They shipped me the dvd, I had to send them my unique hardware ID and the seller had to send me my key associated with my computer.

This video tutorial was quite amateur, I suppose they didn't buy some ultra expensive software to protect their goods.

Can someone tell me a hint about how to do that?

Basically I want to protect my offline content (5 dvds - flash, swf or mp4 or whatever format Camtesia can output), the buyer send me his Hardware ID and I tell him his serial number. After that, the protection is transparent unless he made an hardware-or-OS change.

Thanks!Someone knows how to protect offline video content against piracy?

How to change icon on mac os x?

how can i change the icons on the dash. please help.

btw please explain and sa it in a way that a 14 yo will under standHow to change icon on mac os x?
There are some icons in Mac OS X that are a little tougher than others to change, but most of the desktop icons, especially those for user documents and directories, are easy to change.

Mac OS X provides a context menu for each desktop icon displayed by the Finder application that includes a menu item called ';Get Info.'; It is usually the second item on the menu. Get info displays a rather comprehensive list of configurable information about a document or a folder, and also displays the document or directory's icon at the top.

This is where you can change an icon, believe it or not. By selecting the icon in the ';Get Info'; window, with a mouse left-click, it will cause a blue border to appear. Using the keyboard combination of [Apple Key ] + C (the standard copy text command) you can ';copy'; the icon. Then, by opening another Get Info window and highlighting the icon in the same way, you can use the standard paste text command, [Apple Key ] + V, to paste the icon for the other document.

get the 64 bit cd version of that windowsSo how can you change a 32 bit OS to a 64 bit OS? to handle more memory?
Sadly, you can't do a direct upgrade. You have to reinstall the system with the 64 bit flavor. Quote from microsoft:

If you want to move from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or vice versa, you'll need to back up your files and choose the Custom option during Windows 7 installation. Then, you'll need to restore your files and reinstall your programs. For more information about performing a custom installation, see Installing and reinstalling Windows 7?.So how can you change a 32 bit OS to a 64 bit OS? to handle more memory?
Make sure you have a 64 bit processor and then install a 64 bit OS.

    Confusion on Mac Vs. Windows?

Pretty soon going off to college and was just shopping around for a nice and reliable laptop. Doing fine until it came to operating software issue (Mac or Windows). Ive used Windows all my life and fearing OS change. The majority have told me that Mac is way better than windows, never really tried a mac and from look of the screen shots it looks dull and limited. So my question is how is Mac more better and resourceful than windows and your opinions on favorable OS (operating systems).Confusion on Mac Vs. Windows?
Do you have any problems with windows? No? Then there's no need to switch. The only reason you'll need to switch to a mac is (choose all that apply):

    A. You're feeling left out at the local starbucks.

    B. You feel you could be even trendier.

    C. Your school requires it.

    D. You're a graphic design major, and even then, windows is just as good for that now.

    E. You're too stupid to find things in windows.

    F. You just aren't paying enough for your hardware.

    G. You're in love with white/aluminum/polycarbonate.

    H. You'd like your laptop to double as a bread knife.

    J. You get loads of viruses because you fail to protect your system. A mac's only defense against viruses is obscurity. The OS is just as secure as windows.

And by the way, to the poster above, MS didn't lift elements of OSX for Vista. Quite the opposite.

And the security alerts in vista can easily be turned off.

And yes, a mac is more expensive. Since the only thing that differentiates a mac from any other computer is the OS loaded on it, you might as well buy a cheaper laptop and load Leopard on it.

@WSCM16M3 - You're referring to crapware, which can be uninstalled from windows just like any other OS.Confusion on Mac Vs. Windows?
It's my freshmen year in college, and all of my life, just like you, I used a PC, but i decided to get a Mac for college. One of the best decisions I have ever made. Go to the Apple store in order to check out the programs/features on a Mac, see if it's for you. You will not regret it!
It NEVER gets viruses unless you specifically download like a hundred viruses.
Stay with Windows. Mac is a very limited and bad OS, in my opinion. Whoever told you Mac was better was wrong. If you want to be able to do anything, get Windows.
I made the conversion to a Mac a bit more than a year ago.. Vista is alright, but people get annoyed at all the over-excessive security alerts, and was made to be like the Mac system. It takes a bit to get used to Mac if you change to it, but I think it's worth it. Also, I think you get a free iPod touch with the purchase of a Macbook, which is kinda sweet.
i would get a pc becasue, you are familiar with windows, pcs are cheaper than macs, and if you really dont want to use windows, you can download very user friendly linux operating systems for free. if you look into linux, you will see that paying extra for a mac will give you little benefits

    examples

    cost-linux

    customizability-linux

    security-linux

    system resources-linux
you should definitely get a Mac. Right now I have a MacBook and a PC and personally the laptop is way better than the PC. I would probably never go back to Windows. Usually Mac comes with all the programs that you're going to use most of the time, but Windows gives you programs you don't even need or use which lessens the space on the computer with all the programs so you should definitely get a Mac.
A Mac has very good virus protection, but can't run as many programs. They are also a lot more expensive. I would get a Windows laptop, and put an antivirus program, such as AVG Free Edition on it.
I use a mac and I just LOVE it... and not just cause of the reasons people say (like it's uses less RAM, doesn't get viruses, pretty easy to use) but it just has these little details to it that, when you get to know it your like ';Dang! that's awesome!'; and it's not too hard, switching from xp/vista to mac os x, the biggest thing may be the whole ';not able to use .exe files'; but you can easily get around that by using mac os's built in utility ';boot camp'; (which lets you boot you machine into windows xp/vista).

So yeah, if you can afford it, then by all means go for it, you won't be dissappointed
Macs are for people that like to conform. 1 mac is just like the other few thousand that roll off the line, except that may have a choice of 5 colors.

Windows runs across a wider variety of platforms than Mac or Linux put together. Also, as far as gaming goes, Macs never have or will be better than the mid to high end PCs.

Having used both for many years, I have to say there really isn't a whole lot of difference, but you are far better off going with what you know. Also, be sure to steer clear of the platform holy-wars - those people who try to tell you that, somehow, one system is just morally superior to the other. Both systems have their pros and cons. But I would say that windows is something you *have* to have, while mac is something that is nice to have if you can afford it. If you get a mac, you can always boot into windows either through emulation or boot camp, but keep in mind it's very annoying to have to keep booting into a second operating system. I know that, for something like the first six months I owned my current mac laptop, I always just booted directly into windows and never launched the mac side, which kind of defeated the purpose of getting a mac.
if you get a mac and don't like it there is a program on it called Boot camp on every new mac where you can install windows XP or Vista
if you have no problems on the windows, then stay as a windows user.

Changing from Windows 2000 to Ubuntu 8.04 LS and keeping my charter modem (through USB port)?

I am thinking of changing my OS to Ubuntu and i am wondering, if i change it, will i be able to keep my charter router connected to the USB port, since my computer doesn't have a Ethernet port, and i am not planning to have to have to buy a new port, and, how hard is it to install Ubuntu?Changing from Windows 2000 to Ubuntu 8.04 LS and keeping my charter modem (through USB port)?
It should work, yes. And Ubuntu is very easy to install, probably one of the easiest of the Linux distributions. But make sure all your hardware can support Ubuntu because I made the mistake before of installing it without verifying and it turned out that my graphics card wasn't compatible with the OS, and I was stuck with an X server error .

Yes you can re install using Win XP home CD. Bu it is different from XP Media Center 2005. Just put the CD on the CD/DVD ROM and follow these steps.

    1. Restart your PC and enter the bios setup.

(if you don't know here is a guide http://michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manuf

    Yes, insert your XP CD, restart your computer, enter your BIOS to make sure your CD ROM loads before the hard drive does in the BIOS boot menu and restart again. If you did this correctly, you should see a screen that says ';press any key to enter Windows setup...';

Follow the prompts to install Windows XP. Also make sure to format the drive where you had Vista installed to. Then install Windows XP.
yes you can. Just boot up with the cd and do the install.

I just installed the stuff from the drivers disc Asus gives you in case you decide to install XP. The disc should have come with your Eee. I don't remember if there was anything on there for the webcam or not. I installed XP on my Eee 701 4G and didn't have to go out and look for webcam drivers. I don't know if that's because they came with that CD or if I didn't need them at all. I have used the webcam successfully with Yahoo Messenger, and it shows up as a Video Device or something like that when I go into Windows Explorer, where I can view the webcam and capture pictures from the cam.

How can I change the setting on my computer so that when I open a new window it's the size I want it to be?

I have XP OS. And I changed the settings on this computer once before. My son decided to change it to his liking. The window opens up real narrow now and I can't stand it! Please refresh my memory on how to fix this.

I've tried dragging the window to the size I want it and pressing down ALT and closing the window but it didn't help.

I went into control panel, but I can't remember where to go to change the settings. How can I change the setting on my computer so that when I open a new window it's the size I want it to be?
    Hello:

In the Control Panel it's called Folder Options. On the View tab there's a setting called ';Remember each folder's view settings.'; Check that and it should help- when you set a folder view, it will remember it. That only works with Explorer views.

Cheers! How can I change the setting on my computer so that when I open a new window it's the size I want it to be?
    Hi,

just open a single windows explorer window and then resize it as you want and then click on ';file'; and then click on ';close';.

    your setting would be saved.

check by opening a new window.

Can suggestion with my Pentium 3 notebook?

Hi. I have a Pentium 3 notebook running on 800MHZ, 20GB, 512 MB RAM and Windows ME.

I have difficulty selling it and can't afford at the moment to upgrade it to XP version.

Any suggestion what i could do with it effectively?

i do have in mind of using it for web design purposes but i am not too sure it will fix the current version of IE, Firefox, netscape and Opera browser) and webdesign freeware. Any views on this?

I am not sure if it could support wireless internet access, if yes, how, so i can have free access at the mac donald outlet near my house.

Or should i change the OS to a linux. Ang free linux os to recommend, is red hat free and a top choice?

tks for your patience and time for my question. Can suggestion with my Pentium 3 notebook?
if you don't know what you are doing... don't go to linux! you won't be able to sell it for much money... pentium 3 is getting to be outdated. to get online with wireless.... (assuming you don't have an inbuilt wireless adapter)... buy a wireless adapter... tigerdirect.com has cheap ones.... search for wireless adaptersCan suggestion with my Pentium 3 notebook?
800 MHz P-III really isn't fast enough to run XP. If you still have the original version of Windows and word processing software it would be a good machine to take notes in class.
You can find XP home on ebay for cheap, then shop for a bluetooth.
    http://www.ubuntu.com for free LINUX.

I would install and learn how to use LINUX.
Ubunto and SuSe are good linux bets.

Or, befriend your local computer geek, and see if they've got a spare copy of Windows 2000.
you could give it to me! It's faster than anything I have.

    iamrlk@yahoo.com
your notebook is worth to keep..are you thinking of what it might bring money for your notebook...well, there's alot of things you can do...think boy...whatever your forte bring it up...use it....linux is a good os but, there are differences from windows os...you still have to read about linux before using it...
I built the same computer out of spare parts on a dell motherboard. It's fast as hell. I'm running xp pro on it. there is nothing im unable to do with it. I run photoshop and graphic design software. Or watch Dvd movies. I can't do both but no problem. I have a wireless card and cable modem. You just need to tweek your system and get xp or wait for vista. If you had a 400mhz. Then you would be hurting. Windows me sucks and runs SLOW. Dont up grade, reformat and install a new os. It will be like a new computer.
Let me think. You want to sell an old laptop, in hopes to raise money to buy something better. I fear that an old laptop may be worth $200 TOPS. So in buying a $800 replacement would be a $600 difference.

I actually recommend getting Windows 2000 for that computer. Here's why. You have the speed and RAM for WIndows 2000, and it is a more advanced system then Windows ME. It would work well with FireFox, Opera and other browsers. It could take just about any web developer. You would only be limited to Windows Media Player 9 (not being able to install 10 or 11).

You would have to get Windows 2000 SP4. Even before that, you need Internet Explorer 6 with SP1. Yes, these are downloads from the Microsoft website for FREE.

Windows 2000 Professional would be modestly priced. Windows XP would work, but it would be a bit slow. There is way to much to learn to use LINUX.

It is hard to say if the local restaurant is close enough to you to work. If you can see it through a window, then the signal might be OK. You would be buying a wireless adapter with a bit of High Hopes. So maybe you should get it from STAPLES with the understanding that if it does not work, you can take it back. (they offer a 14 day money back deal). Consider the PC Card type if you have an empty slot. USB ports on your computer might be in short supply.
It is more than twice spec of my Linux laptop, keep it running, I second the Ubuntu suggestion especially it also gone Live/Installer hybrid.

If you have another Administrator Account then you can change it with that. If you have made this account during the Initial Setup Process when you purchased the computer and started it up and it is Windows XP Home Edition, you will be able to go to the Administrator account that is hidden, and you can access this account by restarting your computer in Safe Mode with F8.

create a new admin account, then modify your original account.
Go into your control panel Click on User acct. Click on User acct. again. Click on Administrator. Click on change password. Type in new information.
    Restart in the same mode.

    * If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power

    * Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a ';keyboard error'; message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.

    * Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.

    * Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Then you can go into the user accounts in the control panel, and then creat a new password for the administrator. Then restart the computer and you will be good to go with your new password.

How can a Hard or Floppy drive cause the system to hang and stop working?

I have two hard drives (80 Seagate 7200 %26amp; 120 Maxtor 7200 with 8MB Buffer for both of them) and a floppy drive 3.5';. Recently when I want to read or write a floppy disk, as

soon as I insert the disk I hear a click sound from my Maxtor hard drive (Not the click sound of the FDD) and with that sound my computer will not work anymore and the Red LED for HDD won't turn off. I disconnected the FDD, but when I wanted to write something on the Maxtor HDD I heared that sound again and the hole system stoped too. On day I changed my OS accidentally from Windows XP to Knopix (A live version of Linux) and there I tried to copy something from it, I heared that sound again and saw a warning that said your hard drive stalled. But the system didn't stop and after about 30 seconds it started to to copy from that time that it stoped!

You can just upgrade by purchasing the Windows XP CD installer. Make sure it is genuine and you're all set to go. Just pop in the CD and wait for the system to autoplay. A window will appear prompting whether you'd like to upgrade to Windows XP. Choose the upgrade and overwrite Windows 98. It most cases, you could save Windows XP in a separate partition of just one hard disk but it depends. Overwriting Windows 98 is the best option because it will be only considered trash in your hard disk. How can i change my windows 98 os to windows xp?

DON'T DO IT... i can help you if you restate your question in a clearer manner
If one of the user accounts does not have a password set, you can follow these instructions and it will prompt for a password for each account.
There are a lot of Windows password revealers and crackers available, but I檝e found that Windows Password Recovery Tool is the most effective.:

it not only supports XP, 2000, and NT, I have personally tested it with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate. It works perfectly to reset any local user account to a blank password

You can use the ISO to burn a boot CD. Follow these instructions:

    1. Download ISO file from http://www.windowspasswordsrecovery.com Windows Password Recovery Tool

    2. Burn to a CD using a CD burning tool such as Nero or Roxio or MagicISO

    3. Insert CD into drive and reboot.

    4. You may have to select an option in the BIOS to get the computer to boot from the CD.

Booting up and clearing a password takes a minute or two works like a charm.

My OS is on a small hard drive that has filled up and I want to put it all on my 1 T external instead. How can I? Drag and drop everything? How can I change the drive that my OS is on?
your question is a bit vague, no you do not drag and drop... to effectively answer this question, will need to know what OS your talking about, you will probably need to make a fresh install if the OS on the new drive, or you might be able to keep the OS where it is and just use the external for storage. How can I change the drive that my OS is on?
This is an easy one. You cannot make your external drive bootable and still reliably use your machine. Most software does not support the of external drives as primary.

You may be able to swap drives.

If your external and internal drives use the same interface than you can swap them and reimage to the 1TB drive.

All you need is some software and a USB drive large enough to hold your current HD.

    Get a copy of this free software;

    http://selfimage.excelcia.org/

    At a high level you need to;

    - Create the image of your drive on the USB drive.

    - Install the new HD in your machine.

    - Copy the image to the HD.

You usually do this with a bootable CD that has the selfimage tool on it.

    Good Luck

    EEE-PC 701 OS help!!?

Ok, here is the thing, i have an eee 701 with that Xandros linux os, if i changed the os to ubuntu (tell me how please) and i somehow needed to restore my eee like if an error comes up on boot and i need to wipe all data and get the defaults again, would it be on Xandros or Ubuntu?EEE-PC 701 OS help!!?
    Here's what you should do:

    1. Wait until April 23 to download Ubuntu. The next release is awesome, and everything works out of the box with the Eee PC.

    2. After you've downloaded the .iso file, use UNetBootIn to ';burn'; the disk image to a USB stick.

    3. Keep the USB stick in your Eee PC and rapidly tap Escape during bootup to boot from USB. This will boot a live session of Ubuntu. It won't erase Xandros yet.

    4. In the live session, you can make an image copy of Xandros. But you have to be very careful. First of all, you'll need a backup medium (external hard drive, iPod, another thumb drive) that has at least 4 GB of free space. Plug it into your Eee PC.

    5. Go to the terminal (Applications %26gt; Accessories %26gt; Terminal) and paste in the command

    sudo fdisk -l

This will tell you what your partition table looks like. I believe the Eee PC Xandros will be called /dev/sda (with /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 for the recovery partition and user partitions, respectively).

    Then paste in this command

    df -h

This will tell the name of the backup medium. For this example's sake, let's assume it's /media/usbstick

Once you've figured out the Eee PC is /dev/sda and the backup medium is /media/usbstick, then you want to issue this command:

    sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/media/usbstick/xandroseeebackup.img

Now be VERY careful with this command. If you don't do it correctly, you can erase everything. I'll break it down for you.

';sudo'; allows you to run a command with system privileges. In ordinary Ubuntu you'd be prompted for a password. Since this is the live session, you won't be.

';dd'; copies partitions and drives bit by bit

';if='; specifies the input file to be copied (in this case, the entire Eee drive with Xandros on it)

';of='; specifies the output file where the copy will end up (in this case, as a very large file called xandroseeebackup.img on your backup medium.

After you've done that (the command may take a few minutes to execute), you can then close the terminal window and click the Install icon on the desktop and install Ubuntu right over Xandros. You won't need a swap partition, and you should use the Ext3 filesystem format.

Now, if you ever wanted to get Xandros back, you'd boot from the Ubuntu USB again and issue the reverse command:

    sudo dd if=/media/usbstick/xandroseeebackup.img of=/dev/sda

If you run into problems or have further questions go to http://www.ubuntuforums.org or http://forum.eeeuser.com

Vista OS Recovery Disk !PLEASE HELP!?

Okay, I was planning on changing my OS, my friend said it would be best to make a disk of my vista OS so that if something happens and it wipes my factory OS, I will have the OS backed-up. Does anyone know how to do this? I have a vista laptop so it did not come with any disks because it is all on the hard drive. So is there a folder or something where the vista OS is located so I can back it up?

ThanksVista OS Recovery Disk !PLEASE HELP!?
On most modern laptops there will be a hidden partition containing the installation files, only some manufacturers, such as eMachines; still use DVD/CD media for the recovery disks. This partiton shouldn't get touched when you install a new OS, but to be safe you should back it up.

Your best bet is to use a partition manager/copying program such as partition magic, Norton ghost or similar to back it up to an external hard disk.

AS nod32 quit rightly states you should also think about backing up all of your data files and documents prior to upgrading, just incase something goes amiss and the harddrive gets reformatted.Vista OS Recovery Disk !PLEASE HELP!?
Vista OS , you must purchase the cd .

i think what your friend meant is that you back up you data ( music , picture ... etc ) so if you had to format your laptop you won't lose your data.

Just make sure to head out to Microsoft HCL - That list show you all the compatible hardware. If they have it there then they should have drivers autoloaded for the hardware.

Other than that, you could check your hardware's drivers on the net and try a download from there. Burn that to a disk for backup.

How can i gain full access on a partition made from vista now that i changed my OS to XP?

here is the deal, vista was installed on my C: and i created a partition to use as an extra storage D: but vista did not work out fine for me because of some permission issues so i formatted my C: and changed my OS to XP Sp3. everything is fine except that every time i try to delete or rename a file from D: a message prompt ';cannot delete file, access is denied, make sure that the disk is not full or write-protected or the file is not in used';. i can open my files from D: or even add more files on it,i just cant delete, rename and move the files. please tell me what im supposed to do because i want to have full access on my files. im the only user of my computer. How can i gain full access on a partition made from vista now that i changed my OS to XP?
right click on any directory or partition you cannot access, then select properties and security - then give yourself permission.

if you dont have the security tab, you need to disable simple file sharing

the reason this occurs is due to the partition being NTFS, this then maintains its previous securityHow can i gain full access on a partition made from vista now that i changed my OS to XP?

make sure the usb ports work properly,,

then go and buy a usb wifi adapter that is supported by windows xp...

usually it is a good habit before you install a new OS like windows xp, to check if all the drivers needed for your laptop model are available.
