i have an old laptop running windows 98 and i want to learn how to change it to linux. i dont really care which linux as long as its good. a few of the comp specs are 2 GB HDD and it has a floppy drive as well as a cd drive. however it does not have the internet so i would have to transfer the linux files from my computer with internet to my old laptop via floppy discs. can anyone give me a step by step guide on how to change the OS and a site to download all the linux files and stuff? How to change OS to linux step by step?
Without really knowing the system specs, it's harder to recommend a distro. However, it looks like Puppy Linux is the solution for you.
Let's get started.
First, you're gonna need the LiveCD. Get it from here:

Check if your BIOS supports booting from CD. (If not, you're going to have to create a boot floppy. Get that from here:

After the desktop has loaded, to do a full install, (note: this will erase Windows.) start ';Menu | Setup | Puppy universal installer';. Select the medium that you want to install Puppy to. (This will be your hadrdrive.)
From there, just follow the on-screen prompts!
If you have any problems, look at the official manual/wiki here:

Using floppies will be very slow, and most modern distributions don't even offer that option.
If you have a CD drive in the laptop and a CD burner on your internet-connected computer, that will make it very easy.
You would simply go to any site that offers Linux. Ensure your system meets the minimum requirements for the version you want to download. Once downloaded, install it.
