Yes, it's been done. You should talk to your school's international student office about how long they thing it will take.
The huge drawback is that if you leave the USA during a break in school you cannot come back. You will have to apply for an F-1 outside the USA.
Do NOT stay in the USA past the departure date on your I-94 unless you have been approved to stay.Did any one applied for a change of status from tourist to f-1 visa while here in the us and has been approved?
this happens, and can work. you should get the school to help you apply for the visa, you should be able to show that you can support yourself while in school.. you should be albe show bank accounts with money in them.
