While you can change the icons for various file types using Windows Explorer as MoreAcidThanAlkaline noted (and you can browse for other files containing icon resources), you can also change the icons in existing executables to your own custom icons (or create your own resource DLLs).
Typically, the icons for the operating system shell and for various applications are stored as ';embedded resources'; either in the application (.EXE) itself or inside of a dynamic link library (.DLL). Note that DLLs may also have different extensions.
Using a ';resource editor'; (I've included the link to one called 'Resource Hacker' below), you can modify the resources embedded in these files. Note that resources can be binary data, images (such as icons), dialogs or even text strings, that are used for user interface messages.
The Win32 API (which resource editor programs use) allows for a developer to create their own applications that can modify these resources.
When you have a resource editor, look at some of the files in your \Windows\System32 folder. USER32.DLL is one dynamic link library that has embedded icons. How to change os icons on win xp?????
You can change the icon for any type of file by opening a folder and going to TOOLS / FOLDER OPTIONS / FILE TYPES.
Choose your file type, click on ADVANCED, then on CHANGE ICON, and browse for the icon you want.
You can also change the default file folder icon in this way.
